KENSINGTON HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMY
12+ targets underserved communities. Our current focus is on Kensington Health Sciences Academy located in North Philadelphia.
Kensington is one of Philadelphia's most economically impoverished neighborhoods, with more than 90% of the area's public school students receiving free or reduced lunch.
Kensington high schools are also located in the 1st Congressional District, which was recently identified as the 2nd poorest congressional district in the United States.
Because of the multitude of challenges that comes with urban poverty, many of the neighborhood's students have limited opportunities to break the "poverty cycle" That's where we come in.
THE MEANING OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN THEIR OWN WORDS
PILOT PROGRAM (2010-2011)
In 2010, we launched our first pilot program at Kensington Health Sciences Academy in Philadelphia. We had the privilege of working with nine wonderful students who we each paired with one of our volunteer mentors for their entire senior year. Our mentors walked them through the steps on how to apply to college and helped them with tasks like building a resume, writing personal statements, and obtaining financial aid. They provided the individualized support during the application process that so many students in inner-city schools desperately need but do not have. The results? 100% of the students in our pilot successfully enrolled in college.
