This fall, we’ve had the privilege of expanding our services to a third partner school, Hill-Freedman World Academy!
Hill-Freedman World Academy is a special-admissions public school in the East Germantown neighborhood of Northwest Philadelphia. In 2013, Hill-Freedman expanded upon its successes as a middle school and added a high school, growing one grade at a time. Hill-Freedman approached 12+ to assist with this transition as a new high school. 12+ accepted the challenge and is closely collaborating with Hill-Freedman to help the school’s first graduating classes blaze the trail in postsecondary success.
Hill-Freedman follows a unique model of service, offering both a magnet program and a special education curriculum for students with complex needs. In this first year in the school, 12+ looks forward to helping all students (currently 9th-11th grades) explore postsecondary options and prepare for college. The school celebrates the importance of being life-long learners, and the junior class already shows a strong desire to attend four-year colleges. 12+ will build upon this foundation to enhance the school’s college-going culture, make college a reality for these students, and help students prepare for and succeed in the transition to college.
The Start of a New Chapter
From the beginning of the school year, the 12+ Team has been integrating in the high school community. Students and staff have welcomed 12+ enthusiastically, and 12+ is excited to build on that energy. The PLUS Center has begun to take shape as a welcoming, college-oriented learning environment. College pennants decorate the walls, and a college map illustrates the alma maters of faculty and staff. Students visit the PLUS Center in larger groups for advising sessions, to play chess and Bananagrams, to complete homework assignments, to seek extra help, and to chat with the team. 12+ is working with all 9th graders in their transition to high school through the RAISE program. This week, 12+ gathered faculty and staff for breakfast to celebrate their hard work and dedication.
With the first month of school behind us, we are excited to continue this partnership with Hill-Freedman, empowering the school’s first graduating classes leave a strong legacy through postsecondary success. In the next month, we will meet parents during Back to School Night, recruit emerging student leaders for the PLUS Leader program, and host a school-wide College Week.
Our expansion to Hill-Freedman would not be possible without the support of our amazing donors. Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for allowing us to serve the students of Philadelphia. With you, we can inspire student leaders to take charge of their education. With you, we have been able to expand to our third partner school, servicing an additional 240 students in the City of Philadelphia. With you, our students can seek higher educational prospects and better futures. As we move forward, please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org with suggestions and comments!
