The Start of a New Chapter
At the beginning of this academic year, 12+ had the privilege of expanding its services to another school in Philadelphia. With the support of faculty, students, and donors, 12+ began working with Penn Treaty to further its mission of creating college-going cultures throughout schools in Philadelphia.
Penn Treaty History
The budget crisis that the Philadelphia Public School District faced forced many schools to close down in its wake. In response, Penn Treaty, which originally served only as a middle school, decided to absorb students from local high schools that had closed down. Penn Treaty contacted 12+ to help create a college-going culture in its newly formed middle / high school. Excited by the opportunity to empower more students, 12+ took on the challenge and began its programming for 6th through 12th graders at Penn Treaty.
Throughout the Fall
During these past four months, 12+ has become an integral part of the school culture. 12+ took an empty classroom, which currently serves as a temporary PLUS Center, and redesigned it to inspire everyone who steps inside. Moreover, from this space, 12+ has been able to conduct impactful programming that has reached nearly all 700 students in the school. Some activities that have taken place include:
- 1-on-1 advising for all high school students on a monthly basis
- College Week, a weeklong celebration of postsecondary education
- Guest presentations from students at UPenn Medical School and University of the Sciences
- Weekly volunteer engagement by students from 12+'s Temple University and UPenn chapters
- Administration of the PSAT for juniors
- College access workshops for seniors
- College presentations from admissions representatives
- ...and much more!
As 12+ looks toward the new year, we are excited to continue our partnership with Penn Treaty. We are hoping to finalize construction of our official PLUS Center while expanding the scope of our services within the school.
Our work would not have been possible without the enduring support of our donors. Thank you so much for allowing us to operate in our partner schools and to serve the students of Philadelphia. Please do not hesitate to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org with suggestions and thoughts as we move forward - we love words of encouragement as well =). Together, we will continue to show the world the potential that our students have and the incredible things that can be done in a room.
