PHILADELPHIA

KENSINGTON HEALTH SCIENCES ACADEMY

Kensington Health Sciences Academy

Kensington Health Sciences Academy is a small school with a big personality! Our CTE programs and internship opportunities put the Health Sciences in Kensington Health Sciences Academy. At KHSA, students typically gravitate towards the four-year track, but have been recently showing a large interest in trade schools and job training programs. There are upwards of 20 clubs offered for the students, including Karate Club and Cornhole Club! There is no shortage of student interactions because we have lunches for each respective grade. During these lunches, students will come in with questions about post-secondary options, ask for tutoring, or play a good game of Connect 4 or Chess. Into the next year, we will continue to navigate and assist students through the varying pathways, maintain lasting relationships with staff and admin, support school-led initiatives and immerse ourselves into school culture events.

PENN TREATY HIGH SCHOOL

Penn Treaty High School

Penn Treaty High School

Penn Treaty is a combined middle and high school that prides itself on having a “family” atmosphere. While not as academically-focused as some of our other partner schools, for staff and students alike, relationship-building is paramount. With this in mind, our team has historically contributed to this atmosphere with fun traditions like “Cookie Monday” and our Plus Center Squishmellow mascots, George and Doug. 12+ is a well integrated part of the school and we often wear many hats, particularly as the school adjusts to our new administrative team. PT students tend to be more career-focused, and while they pursue a variety post-secondary pathways, their decisions are often based on how closely it aligns to a specific job/profession.

HILL-FREEDMAN WORLD ACADEMY

Hill-Freedman World Academy

Hill-Freedman follows a hybrid model: 80% of students participate in the IB program and 20% are students with complex special needs. While we work directly with students in the IB program, both programs are present at all school events and in the community. The school is small and has a close knit feel with an active after school culture. Classes can be challenging academically, especially during junior and senior year, which is a draw for some students and families and difficult to manage for others. It has historically been a very college centric environment; in lieu of a traditional uniform, Hill Freedman students wear college gear every day. In recent years, typical post-secondary plans have started to become more varied, with students choosing to attend two-year colleges and pursue trade programs. However, our advising work with students often remains quite college focused.

KENSINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

Kensington High School

Kensington High School is your friendly neighborhood school that offers 3 Career & Technical Education (CTE) courses – Computer Support Systems, Sports Marketing and Management, and Engineering – and several after-school activities/clubs! At K-Classic, you will encounter students with a wide variety of post-secondary interests, especially within community college and employment. Our ~450 students have a block schedule daily and LOVE to visit our Center during lunch and Advisory to ask questions, get class work done, or play a rousing round of Uno. In the coming academic year, we will be continuing our work towards building a strong foundation and continuing legacy at KHS, which includes more programming with underclassmen, relationship-building with staff and admin, and creating lasting traditions with the school.

BELMONT CHARTER SCHOOL

Belmont Charter High School

Belmont Charter High School is 12 Plus’s first charter school partner. Located in West Philly, Belmont enrolls roughly 300 students from the surrounding neighborhood. As part of the larger Belmont K-12 Network, the high school has access to a large pool of resources – from field trip incentives for students to very talented and passionate staff.  Since many students have been at Belmont from grade school, they feel a strong connection to the community and will often work part-time in the childcare or after-school programs.  The school has a robust College & Career (CCR) department, leading to a majority of students choosing to pursue higher education at either a 2 or 4 year college. 12 Plus’s partnership has evolved over the years, offering both SAT test prep and more targeted alumni support.

THE LINC

The LINC High School

The LINC is the latest 12 Plus partner school in Philly but we’re already really connected to the strong community here! The population is pretty small, so we get to know each senior, and we’re able to work with the whole student body throughout the year. The LINC has a project-based learning curriculum, which presents a unique set of opportunities and challenges for 12+. On one hand, the whole staff is very supportive of our efforts to connect what students learn in school to life beyond graduation. At the same time, the focus on projects means that our seniors need extra support navigating admissions and placement testing, as well as adjusting to college-level assessments such as tests and essays. We’re excited to continue tailoring 12 Plus’s programming to meet the LINC’s needs.

CAMDEN

EASTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL

Eastside High School

Eastside High School (formerly Woodrow Wilson) is a very traditional neighborhood high school, with some special features. There is a heavy ESOL student population in the building, with students attending dedicated ESOL courses, including senior seminars where students work on completing the steps of their post-secondary planning with teachers and 12+ staff. We’ve found that working to adapt material to meet the community’s evolving needs has been the practice, allowing our program and team to thrive in this building. There is endless opportunity for staff at this school to continue to increase not only a “college going” culture but also one that promotes and encourages any type of post-high school training or education.

CAMDEN CAMPUS
Camden High | Brimm Medical Arts | Big Picture Learning Academy

Camden High Campus

The Camden High Campus has a single PLUS Center that serves students attending 3 different high schools all sharing the same building. Each has a slightly different personality and culture.

Camden High is a traditional high school with a very prominent athletic department. Big Picture Learning Academy is a project-based school where students attend internships off-campus every Wednesday. Brimm Medical Arts is focused on healthcare professions and recently launched is Pharmacy Technician program.

Camden students have a wide range of post-secondary interests. The spectrum ranges from heavy HBCU and collegiate athletic interests to students who are deeply committed to directly entering the workforce. Our team has worked diligently to properly equip students to pursue all pathways. Working in this building also requires staff to balance the pressure of increased visibility as a representative of 12 Plus while having access to 3 times the fun stuff with students, celebrations, acceptances, prom, etc.
