Life of a Fellow: Gloria

As the school year has come to an end, our Fellow, Gloria, from Penn Treaty reflects on what this momentous period means. From the uncertainty of going back to in-person learning to developing new Penn Treaty traditions, this school year has been full of memories. Continue reading to hear more of Gloria’s story!

As I reflect on this past year, I simply can’t believe how fast time has flown by (a sentiment our graduating seniors can surely relate to!). It’s hard to imagine, but, back in August, there was still a looming sense of uncertainty about what the school year would actually look like. After an entire year and a half of virtual learning, many students were anxious to be returning back to a physical classroom.

With no manual or clear set of instructions on how to go about school amidst an ongoing pandemic, this would undoubtedly be unchartered territory for all parties involved. What will the return to in-person school look like? Will school stay open? How do we protect our students and ourselves from COVID-19? How do we ensure that our students feel supported in their return to school? As my team and I would ruminate on these questions, we strived to create a welcoming and safe space for our students.

One way we welcomed back the students was by bringing back a longstanding 12 Plus Penn Treaty tradition: Cookie Monday! It was heartwarming to see the eyes of upperclassmen light up as they remembered Cookie Monday from their earlier high school years and the ears of underclassmen perk up as we introduced them to this tradition. Upon its return, Cookie Monday would quickly become a fan favorite once again–with our students regularly requesting Cookie Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The first Cookie Monday of the school year!

Although our cookie traditions have not yet managed to extend past the first day of the week, it has since spawned new traditions such as Door Time and Study Buddies; both of which were formed throughout this school year. These small traditions have immeasurably helped rebuild, foster, and restore a much-needed sense of community within our Center.

In between classes, students will often stop by our Center to say hello. One particular student always greets us with “Hi Misses, the best Misses!” These little moments never fail to bring a smile to my face. I am extremely glad and grateful that students feel comfortable in our Center and comfortable enough to share bits and pieces of their day with us. There have been so many moments of laughter and joy working alongside our students.

Whether it be finding a new job, organizing a hot dog fundraiser, presenting their College Fair poster, receiving high marks on their chemistry exam, scoring a point in a basketball game, or getting accepted into one of their top programs; my students have so many reasons to celebrate and they should be so proud of themselves. Our seniors have, especially, worked hard this past year as they excitedly step into the next chapter of their lives, whether it be college, trade school, or a different pathway. It has been an honor and privilege to take part in their journey and to celebrate their early milestone achievements alongside them.

Fellows, Gloria and Amanda, with Penn Treaty Seniors on a visit to the Community College of Philadelphia.

I am grateful to be a part of this incredible learning community at Penn Treaty that encourages the growth and development of our students. As our students progress forward in their education and future career plans, there will be uncertainties that lie ahead. However, with the unequivocal poise, determination, and resilience that they’ve already demonstrated, I know that they will continue to build and become parts of wonderful communities of their own.
